White Cliffs Small WWII Structures

A ventilation shaft of the railway tunnel at the bottom of the cliffs. Parts of these tunnels are accessible if you know where to look.

One of the lookout & machine gun bunkers. There are a few of these dotted along the cliff. The metal framing now rusted to fuck just like the undercarriage of a Ford KA.

A machine gun pillbox cut in half. Not sure what happened to it or why.

A close up of the cut in half pill box.

The sound mirror from its point to where it focuses the sound. If you shout from this angel you can hear your voice reflected back at you.

An old sound mirror still silently guards the coast of the white cliffs from any potential invaders that may still be lurking.

An old pill box on the edge of the cliffs.

One of the ventilation shafts for the railway tunnel at the bottom of the cliffs. These are dotted along the cliffs between Dover & Folkstone amongst the WWII ruins.

Lydden Spout Battery

Most of the surface structures are gone, but a few notable ones remain, some foundations of others remain.

The training gun range. If you do some digging in the mound in front of the range you can fine old bullets.

The mess halls, these were where the soldiers were fed.

The officers mess hall. These have been completely gutted & are used as shelters for the cows these days. This is the only one that has a fireplace in it.

The normal mess hall where the rest of the soldiers were fed. These are the only standing building left in this area.

My partner sitting on top of the officers mess hall.

Me on top of the officers mess hall.

The mess halls viewed from the plotting room emergency exit.

The Plotting Room emergency exit. Sadly currently sealed off.

The remains of one of the gun battery's. Mostly concrete foundations, the subsurface structures still remain in reasonable condition.

The entrance to one of the battery guns. These are quite awkward to get down but can be explored.

Down in Officers Shelter next to the Gun Store for one of the guns. We did not go into the magazines for the guns sadly as it looked a little dangerous.

The Nissan Hut. Now fenced off to stop cattle falling down the stairs. The condition inside is quite poor.

A view from the other side. The emergency exit is also visible.

One side of the Nissan Hut, there are cable ducts coming in showing communications between the other bunkers.

The little fireplace in one of the lookout bunkers.

The lookout nest, pretty gutted. Looks to have had cable troughs in at one point.

The other side of the lookout nest.

Another bunker that had a MK3 radar unit next to it. This bunker was not a standard lookout one. It has quire a few more rooms.

Part of the inside of the bunker.

Another part of the bunker. The small room though the window is filled with modern graffiti about teenagers fucking each other.

One of the larger rooms, devoid of much graffiti or original items.

Another lookout nest overlooking the cliffs with a nice view of the sea.

Two small rooms are at the back of this lookout nest. Not sure what they were for.

One of the other more larger lookout bunkers. This one has two levels. The top level has been left to rot & the bottom level is as storage for hay.

Inside the top bunker, it looks like more equipment was used as there are cable troughs in the walls & floor.

Hougham Battery

Close to all the surface structures are gone. The guns are buried with only the top of the ammo lift shaft poking out.

Houghams Plotting room. Has a similar layout to Lydden Spouts one, however this one is locked up so no entry is possible unless I get to speak to the farmer at some point.

The old generator house. Now completely empty with little evidence of its war time function.

Inside it is only used as a barn. Filled with hay & animal feed. The side entrances have been used to house tools used for maintaining the fields.

The rabbit hole that leads to the battery's dressing station. It is only when traveling between the remaining buildings & bunkers you realize the scale these defenses use to be.

The only part of the guns that remains above the surface. The top of one of the ammo lift shafts. Apparently this is four meters deep. However it is filled in with dirt & non-accessible, people have tried.

Inside the ammo lift shaft there is part of the framing for the lift. Sadly completely filled in with dirt. The winches still remain up in the top part if one is brave enough to clime in.
