LMNC Apple II Europlus

So this Apple II had RAM issues & no PSU. These machine are nice to work on as they are very well designed. First thing to do was replace the RIFA cap that had detonated in the PSU. Then I mounted the PSU in the computer. The next part was to work on the RAM as all that came up was jargon on the display. Typical symptom of a RAM issue.

I then removed all the RAM chips, removed them from the RAM expansion board & started plugging them back in. Some of the RAM chip pins were silver & were tarnished. A visitor kindly lent me his nail file which I used to remove the tarnishing off the pins. I had to odd pin fall off on me so I also soldered some new ones on which I have done with vintage RAM chips before. Mostly my IBM 5150. The donor RAM expanded board ended up in the spares draw in the computer room.

But the machine was booting up. However the keyboard was having issues. So that was a fix for another day as I had run out of time by that point.

The the first issue to fix was the little light bulb that had at some point went pop. It was the machines power indicator. Interesting they never used an LED.

So since a replacement bulb was not available, time to use a yellow LED. I used a 220 ohm resistor as it was only powered by 5V.

After a fidelity faff I managed to plug the LED into the bulb socket.

It was a little to tall for the plastic cover so I just bent it down a bit. That worked a treat & it finally fit.

Now to tackle the dad keys.

IPA is my friend in this case, some people drink this stuff, yuck.

I removed the offending keys & sprayed with IPA. I then repressed them multiple times until the keys started reliably working.

The keyboard after treatment & back working like it did when it was new.

Keys all tested & working.

More testing but the machine is now fully working.

Apple II Europlus all assembled & working nicely.

The video goes into more details on he issues I fixed with the machine.
